Description
ILLNESS AND DISEASES
An illness is an alibi for our unresolved problems. We are not innoncent victims of some quirk of nature, but actually the author of our own sickness.
Symptoms are bodily expressions of psychological conflicts, able through their symbolism to reveal the patients current problems.
When the various bodily functions are working together in a particular way an overall pattern emerges which we feel to be harmonious and so refer to as health. If a particular function goes wrong, it compromises the overall harmony to a greater or lesser degree and we call the result illness.
Hence, illness can be an abandonment of harmony. The disturbance of the harmony takes place within consciousness and merely manifests itself in the body. The body is the representational aspect of consciousness and all the changes that go on within consciousness. Hence if a persons’ consciousness falls into imbalance, the fact becomes visible and tangible in the form of bodily symptoms.
Symptoms are many and various, yet they are expressions of one and the same event which we call illness and which always occurs within a persons consciousness. Just like the body cannot live without consciousness, so it cannot become ‘ill’ without consciousness either.
When a symptom manifests itself in a persons’ body, it draws attention to itself to a greater or lesser degree and thus interrupts life’s former continuity. A symptom is a signal which directs our attention, awareness and energy towards itself and thus disrupts the smooth flow of life. A symptom demands our attention. We regard this as a disturbance and generally have only aim, to make the trouble go away. And so the battle against the symptom begins. The symptom always ensures that we manage to concern ourselves with it
